When we remove your braces, we will begin the retention stage of your treatment. The retention phase last approximately 6 months. Special cases of grinding or more unstable corrections may require more wear time.  Retainers are recommended to be worn full time for the first 6 months.  During this time, the bone supporting your teeth is strengthening to support the teeth in their new positions.  Your final orthodontic result depends on your retainers, so it's important to follow through with the hard work you’ve put in so far.

Removable Retainers

Upper and lower hawley retainers are removable. You must be very careful when handling your  retainers, as they are fragile and costly to replace. You are given a special case for your retainers; please make sure you keep them in this case when they're not being worn!  Remember to remove your retainers before brushing, and brush your retainers before placing them back in your mouth.  To clean these retainers, brush them with toothpaste using warm water.

Your retainers should be worn at all times with the exception of eating and brushing your teeth. Your retainers should also be removed when participating in sports that require a mouthguard or while swimming. After 6 months of full-time wear, we may revise your retention treatment, allowing the retainers to strictly be worn at night.

For long-term lifetime fitness, your retainer must be worn often enough to fit well.  Retention is the key to long-term success.  Be happy with your smile!
